What Child Is This?
What did Jesus come to do when he was born into this world over two thousand years ago?
The old hymn “What Child Is This?” poses this same question of Jesus: “What child is this, who, laid to rest on Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping?”
Jesus was no ordinary child. Jesus is the the Christ Child, the Anointed One, the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Messiah of God, the Prince of Peace, who had come to save his people from their sin and to bring life and peace to his people on earth.
The Prophet Isaiah wrote, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6, ESV).
Jesus was no ordinary child. This child, the son, was given as God’s gift to us. This child has the weight of the world upon his shoulders as he governs over all the earth. This child is the “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace."
May we see Jesus and receive Jesus as God’s Son who was given to us as God’s good and glorious gift.
A Collect for the First Sunday of Christmas: "Almighty God, you have poured upon us the new light of your incarnate Word: Grant that this light, kindled in our hearts, may shine forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen." (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
