What Jesus Prayed

When Jesus prayed, what did he desire? What was the heart of Jesus for his people when he prayed to his Father in heaven?

You can tell a lot about the condition of a person’s heart and their deepest cares and desires by listening to their prayers. We can learn about the heart of God through the prayers of Jesus.

In John’s Gospel account, John records the High Priestly prayer of Jesus. John tells us Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:1-3, ESV).

Jesus longed to glorify his Father through his own glorification. Jesus wanted to use his power and authority to bring attention and fame to God. Jesus longed for everyone to receive eternal life, and for all people to know God the Father and to know him. This is eternal life, that we know God, and that we know God is the heart of Jesus.

May we hear the heart of God through the prayer of Jesus, and may we know the Father and know the Son and have eternal life in his name.

A Collect for the Sunday after the Ascension: “O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
