What You Use
What measure do you use in determining what you do? How do you determine how much to serve? How do you determine how much to give? How do you determine how much good you do in the world?
What measure would you enjoy receiving? How much would you appreciate being served? How much would you like to be given? How much good would you like to receive?
We all have a standard by which we give, serve, and do good, and we all have expectations around what we wish to receive.
In Luke’s Gospel account, Jesus said, “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38, ESV).
We should give, serve, and do good in an abundance. The measure we use should be overflowing with abundant goodness. If we do this, we will find that it always returns to us.
May we use the measurement we would like to receive as we bless others through our generous giving, serving, and doing good.
A Collect for Mission III: “Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the Cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
