Without Work

What would the world look like without work? Would our own lives have provision, purpose, or prosperity without meaningful work?

Without work the fabric of God’s good plan for his creation comes unraveled. We were created to do good work. Work gives us provision and purpose. Work is good.

The wisdom of the Proverbs teaches us many practical truths about work. One Proverb says, “Whoever is lazy regarding his work is also a brother to the master of destruction.” (Proverbs 18:9).

The enemy is the master of destruction, and is hostile to work. When we do not attend our labor rightly and honorably, we participate in the destructive work of the enemy, and we neglect God’s good purpose of cultivation.

The Apostle Paul exhorted the Colossian church, saying, “Whatever work you do, do it with all your heart. Do it for the Lord and not for men. Remember that you will get your reward from the Lord. He will give you what you should receive. You are working for the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24).

Without work we wither. With work we flourish with God’s purpose and provision.

The wisdom of the Proverbs teaches us, “Prosperity comes from hard work, but talking too much leads to great scarcity.” (Proverbs 14:23).

Without work we live in scarcity. With work we live in God’s provision, God’s purpose, and God’s prosperity and blessing.

May we live with God’s provision, purpose, and prosperity as we live our lives doing God’s meaningful work in the world.

A Prayer For The Unemployed: “Heavenly Father, we remember before you those who suffer want and anxiety from lack of work. Guide the people of this land so to use our public and private wealth that all may find suitable and fulfilling employment, and receive a just reward for their labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (#47, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
