Finding The Lost
How determined is God to seek out and to save the lost? What lengths will God go to in order to find what is missing?
Jesus told the parable of the lost coin in Luke’s Gospel account to express the diligence of God to seek out and to find that which is lost.
Jesus said, “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15:8-10, ESV).
Like a woman who looses a coin in her home, God lights a lamp, overturns the entire house, and sweeps every square inch in order to find what has been lost.
God is relentless in his search for the lost.
When God finds the lost he celebrates with all his friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the lost.” And when the lost is found—when one sinner repents, there is great joy with the angels in heaven.
May we rejoice and take comfort that God is good at finding the lost.

A Prayer For The Absent: “O God, whose fatherly care reaches to the ends of the earth: We ask you graciously to behold and bless those we love who are now absent from us, especially those who are lost. Defend them from all dangers of soul and body, and grant that both they and we, drawing nearer to you, may be bound together by your love, in the communion of your Holy Spirit and in the fellowship of your saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (#54, Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
