Seeking And Finding The Lost
What would make you leave everything you have to seek out something, or someone else?
Jesus seeks out the lost.
As the Good Shepherd of the sheep, Jesus taught that if he had one hundred sheep, he would leave ninety-nine sheep to find one lost sheep—to rescue it and to bring it back.
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus told a parable, saying, “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?” (Luke 15:3-4, ESV).
Jesus seeks out lost people.
Jesus does not want us to be wandering around lost and aimless. He wants us to be cared for and loved and to live securely within his fold—in safety and with purpose.
Jesus leaves everything to seek us out when we are lost and wandering.
Later in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus says, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10, ESV).
Jesus’ purpose is to seek out and to find and to save the lost. This is why he came.
May we take comfort when we are lost, or when our family or friends are lost, that Jesus leaves everything and seeks us out—to save us and to bring us into his fold.

A Collect For The Fourth Sunday of Easter: Good Shepherd: “O God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd of your people: Grant that, when we hear his voice, we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
