God Is Light

Have you experienced walking in darkness? What is it like to attempt to live and to move in this world without the proper light?

This world is filled with the darkness of evil, brokenness, and sin. We cannot walk in this darkness and not stumble. We need light.

John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, wrote, “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5, ESV).

God is light. God’s light is the illumination we need to navigate the darkness of this world, because in him is no darkness at all.

Jesus spoke to his disciples about following him and not walking in the darkness. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12, ESV).

Jesus is the personification of illumination. Jesus is the light. When we follow him, we do not walk in the dark, and we have the light of his life illuminating the way.

Jesus instructed his disciples saying, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” (John 11:9-10, ESV).

Followers of Jesus walk in the light of day as they walk with Jesus, and they do not stumble through the darkness of this life, because they have the light of God within them.

Jesus also encouraged his followers with these words, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.” (John 12:35, ESV).

When we have the light of Jesus, we walk in the light of Jesus, and we know where we are going, because Jesus illuminates the path.

May we walk in the light of Jesus—the light of the world, and avoid the darkness of this life as we “walk in the light, as he is in the light, and have fellowship with one another, as the blood of Jesus God’s Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7, ESV).

A Collect For Aid Against Perils: “Lighten our darkness, we beseech you, O Lord; and by your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
