Jesus’ Return—Jesus’ Timing

How will we know when Jesus will come again? What should we anticipate at his return?

Just like we discern the seasons and can discern the patterns of the weather, we can anticipate the second coming of Jesus. We can discern the end of this age and the soon and coming Kingdom of God.

When Jesus returns, he will come in his perfect and discernible timing. Jesus himself told the Parable of the Fig Tree to encourage his followers in how to be watchful for his return.

LIn Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus said, “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.” (Matthew 24:32-33, ESV).

Just as we can discern the seasons, so we can discern the second coming of Jesus. When we see what Jesus described in Matthew chapter twenty-four, we know that Jesus is returning and is close to the very gate. We can then prepare to meet Jesus and usher into this world God and his Kingdom.

The timing of his return is nearer than we can imagine, as Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:34-35, ESV).

Jesus is returning sooner than we realize and God’s word will endure to the end. Jesus’ promises will carry us until he comes again.

May we eagerly and faithfully anticipate Jesus’ second coming, in his perfect timing, holding securely to the promise and the eternal security of God’s word.

A Prayer For Watchfulness, by Lancelot Andrewes: “Thou, who with thine own mouth hast told us that at midnight the bridegroom shall come: Grant that the cry, “The bridegroom cometh!” may sound evermore in our ears, that so we be never unprepared to meet him, or forgetful of the souls for whom he died, for whom we watch and pray. And save us, O Lord. Amen.” (#109., Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
