Love, Submission, And Reverence
What is the best posture we can have towards another person? How do we best love and serve one another?
God calls us to lovingly serve one another in mutual submission to one another out of reverence for Jesus Christ.
The Christian life is communal, because our God is communal—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Because God submits in interdependence to his triune self, we are to submit to God and to one another, as his church—his body, in interdependence.
The Apostle Paul wrote the church in Ephesus, saying, “Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:19-21, ESV).
Our respect and reverence towards our brothers and sisters should be worshipful as we address one another in singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs—making melodies to the Lord with all our heart, as we give God thanks always, and for everything.
We love, submit, and reverence one another worshipfully as we submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
May we love one another and mutually submit ourselves to one another as we reverence Jesus Christ together as His Church.
In Christ alone, Robbie
A Collect For Mission, III: “O God, you manifest in your servants the signs of your presence: Send forth upon us the Spirit of love, that in companionship with one another your abounding grace may increase among us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
