Our Rooted Faith

How rooted is your faith? Can you historically trace your salvation through God’s salvation history with his people?

Our salvation through Jesus is rooted in God’s faithfulness in keeping his promises to his people. We have a rooted and grounded faith in our God who is faithful.

God promised King David that he would establish an everlasting kingdom through his lineage. God said to David, “Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.” (2 Samuel 7:16, ESV).

The Prophet Isaiah proclaimed, “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.” (Isaiah 11:1, ESV).

The Gospel of Matthew records Jesus’ genealogy, saying, “Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king.” (Matthew 1:5-6, ESV).

Paul wrote the church in Rome telling of the good news of hope for all people, including the Gentiles, because of God’s fulfilled promise in Isaiah. Paul quoted Isaiah, saying, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.” (Romans 15:12, ESV).

The Apostle Paul spoke of Israel’s history and Jesus the Messiah coming from King David’s lineage, when he said, “God raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.” (Acts 13:22-23, ESV).

And lastly, in the Book of Revelation, Jesus said, “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.” (Revelation 22:16, ESV).

Our faith is rooted in the salvation history of God’s faithfulness in keeping his promises to his people.

May we have a rooted faith in Jesus the righteous branch from the shoot of Jesse, an everlasting King, who is bringing about his everlasting Kingdom.

A Collect for The Second Sunday in Advent: “Blessed Lord, who caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and the comfort of your Holy Word we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
