Servants of God

What are the expectations of a servant of God? What does a servant expect from their master?

As servants of God we are called to be faithful and obedient without expectation of anything in return.

In Luke’s gospel account, Jesus taught about servanthood, saying, “Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’?” (Luke 17:7, ESV).

A servant is expected to do his or her duty and not to expect anything in return from the master. It is their obligation to serve.

Jesus went on to describe the obligation of the servant, saying, “Will [the master] not rather say to [the servant], ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?” (Luke 17:8-9, ESV).

The master expects the servant to consider his need above the servant’s own need, without the expectation of gratitude or validation, and without expecting anything in return.

We are also called to serve Jesus in this same selfless way. Our response to our Master—God should be precedence and humble obedience.

As Jesus concluded this teaching: “So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” (Luke 17:10, ESV).

May we be selfless and humble servants of our master Jesus and do everything that is our duty, expecting nothing in return, as we serve him with gladness.

A Collect for the Eve of Worship: “O God, the source of eternal light: Shed forth your unending day upon us who watch for you, that our lips may praise you, our lives may bless you, and our worship on the morrow give you glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
