Wisdom and Word
Where do you go to receive wisdom and a word from God?
There is so much information coming at us from every direction. We are bombarded by different mediums of communication, facilitating sending us messages from a variety of value systems and conflicting worldviews.
A medium is something in a middle position. Most likely you have heard the expression, “Let’s look for a happy medium.”
A medium is also a means of communicating or conveying information, an idea, or a message. The plural of medium is media.
Media is a channel or system of communicating information, or a form of entertainment, a published work, a radio, television, livestream, or social media which broadcasts and carries advertising. Media can also be a mode of artistic expression or communication.
A medium can be idolatrous as well, as it can refer to the practice of looking for the living among the dead. Those who seek to use a medium are looking for truth, a word, or answers by consulting something or someone other than God.
God spoke through the Prophet Isaiah, saying, “And when they say to you, 'Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,' should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?" (Isaiah 8:19, ESV).
When we look to media or any medium for what only God can give, we are falling into the same sin and judgement of idolatry that Isaiah warned the Israelites against.
May we never seek the living among the dead. May we seek the wisdom and a word from God. May we inquire of our God alone for the answers we are looking for, and the life that we are seeking.
A Collect for the Presence of Christ: “Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.” (Book of Common Prayer, 2019).
